Supermarine was founded in 1912 at Woolston, Southampton, by Noel Pemberton-Billing, who was interested in flying boats. The firm designed several aircraft (mostly unsuccessful) for the Royal Navy during the First World War. However, in 1917, the brilliant aircraft designer R.J. Mitchell joined the firm and began designing recordbreaking aircraft. Mitchell's career culminated in the design of the Spitfire, which went into prototype shortly before his death in 1937.
In spite of its design successes, Supermarine became financially troubled in 1928 and was forced to partner with Vickers, becoming Vickers Supermarine Ltd.
Other aircraft designed by Vickers included the Stanraer flying boat and the Walrus seaplane.
