Vladivostok (131.886E 43.109N) was the most important Russian port in the Far East. It had ample facilities, rail connections to European Russia, and severalairfields. Located on Golden Horn Bay off the Sea of Japan, it continued to receive Soviet-flag merchant traffic until the last few days of the war, which the Japanesepermitted to pass through La Perouse Strait between Karafuto and Hokkaido. These ships carried substantial Lend-Leasefrom the United States.
Vladivostok was not ice free at the time of the Pacific War, but the Soviets kept the harbor open through much of the winter months using icebreakers.
The city was occupied by Japanese troops in December 1917 and again in April 1918 as part of the Siberian Intervention. They were not withdrawn until 1922.
