Yamada Sadayoshi was commander of 25 Air Flotilladuring the Coral Seabattle and the early Guadalcanalcampaign. Yamada had a distinguished career as a naval aviator for 25 years and was described as "...mustachioed, aristocratic-looking " (Gamble 2010). He had a pronounced tendency to exaggerate his men's accomplishments.
