The greatest river of Chinaand third longest river in the world, the Yangtze flows 3,960 miles from its source in Tibet to its mouth near Shanghai. It is navigable as far as the Yangtze Gorges west of I’chang. It could be crossed only by ferry over its navigable length in 1941.
