The Yellow Sea is an embayment of the East China Sea located betweenChina to the west and north and Korea to the east. Its extreme northwest portion, located west of the Shantung and Kwantung Peninsulas, was known as Chihli Bay. (It is now known as the Bohai Sea.) The Yellow Sea is shallow throughout and gets its name from the large quantities of sediment carried into the water by the Yellow River.
The Yellow Sea was a Japaneselake during most of the Pacific War. As American submarines became more experienced and hungrier for targets, they began to venture into the Yellow Sea, in spite of the risks of operating in such shallow waters.
