The modern Delta launch vehicles are designated by a 4-digit designation system, which contains information on the cofiguration of the stages, strap-ons and upper-stages:

1. Digit = Type of core and strap-on motors

0 = Long Tank, MB-3 engine, Castor-2 motors
1 = Extended Long Tank, MB-3-III engine, Castor-2 motors
2 = Extended Long Tank, RS-27 engine, Castor-2 motors
3 = Extended Long Tank, RS-27 engine, Castor-4 motors
4 = Extended Long Tank, MB-3-III engine, Castor-4A motors
5 = Extended Long Tank, RS-27 engine, Castor-4A motors
6 = Extra Extended Long Tank, RS-27 engine, Castor-4A motors
7 = Extra Extended Long Tank, RS-27A engine, GEM-40 motors *
8 = Delta-3 Tank, RS-27A engine, GEM-46 motors

* 7xxxH version uses GEM-46 motors

→ all Thor based launches

2. Digit = Number of strap-ons around core

0, 3, 4, 6 or 9 can be used

3. Digit = Type of second stage

0 - AJ10-118F
1 - TR-201
2 - AJ10-118K
3 - RL10B-2

4. Digit = Type of third stage

0 = no upper stage
1 = Star-24
2 = FW-4D
3 = Star-37D
4 = Star-37E
5 = PAM-D /Star-48B
6 = Star-37FM
