DESCRIPTION
Detail of Atlas and Gaea from a painting depicting Heracles' quest for the golden apples. The Titan Atlas is seated on a throne and holds a royal sceptre in his hand. Gaea (the Earth) stands beside him. She is depicted as a matronly woman holding a sceptre. Heracles, accompanied by the god Hermes, approaches from the left (not shown). To the right of Gaea, one of the Hesperides stands beside a serpent-entwined tree (not shown). The figures of Atlas and Gaea (Ga) are both labelled on the vase.
