Sir William Gordon of Afton, 1st Bt.1

Sir William Gordon of Afton, 1st Bt. was born in 1654.1 He was the son of William Gordon of Earlston and Mary Hope.2 He married Mary Campbell, daughter of Sir George Campbell of Cessnock, on 26 February 1692.1 He died in December 1718, without issue.1
He was commissioned in 1670 with the rank of officer, in the service of the army of Frederick, Duke of Brandenburg.1 He fought in the Duke of Monmouth's uprising in 1685.1 He was a member of King William III's entourage, landing with him at Torbay on 5 November 1688.1 He fought in the Battle of Steenkirk in July 1692.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.1 He held the office of Governor of Fort William.1 He was created 1st Baronet Gordon, of Earlston and Afton, co. Kirkcudbright [Nova Scotia] on 9 July 1706, with a special remainder to his brother Alexander and the heirs male of his body.1

Jane Bickerton was born in 1634. She was the daughter of Robert Bickerton.1 She married, secondly, Colonel Thomas Maxwell.1 She married, firstly, Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk, son of Henry Frederick Howard, 22nd Earl of Arundel and Lady Elizabeth Stuart, before 23 January 1677/78.1 She died on 28 August 1693.1
Her married name became Maxwell.1 From before 23 January 1677/78, her married name became Howard. After her marriage, Jane Bickerton was styled as Duchess of Arundel before 23 January 1677/78.

Mary Mordaunt, Baroness Mordaunt was the daughter of Henry Mordaunt, 2nd Earl of Peterborough and Lady Penelope O'Brien.2 She married, firstly, Henry Howard, 7th Duke of Norfolk, son of Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk and Lady Anne Somerset, on 8 August 1677.1 She and Henry Howard, 7th Duke of Norfolk were divorced on 11 April 1700 on the grounds of her adultery with Sir John Germaine, 1st Bt.1 She married, secondly, Sir John Germaine, 1st and last Bt. circa 15 September 1701.1 She and Henry Howard, 7th Duke of Norfolk were separated in 1685.2 She died on 17 November 1705, without issue.1
Her married name became Howard. She succeeded as the 7th Baroness Mordaunt [E., 1532] on 19 June 1697, de jure, assuming the title to have been created by writ, which it was declared to have been by a House of Lords ruling in 1928 although no documentary evidence to that effect had been found.1 From circa 15 September 1701, her married name became Germaine.1 She left the Drayton Manor estate to her second husband.1

Mary Maria Winifred Francisca Sherburne1

Mary Maria Winifred Francisca Sherburne was the daughter of Sir Nicholas Sherburne, 1st and last Bt.1 She married, firstly, Thomas Howard, 8th Duke of Norfolk, son of Lord Thomas Howard and Mary Elizabeth Savile, on 26 May 1709.1 She married, secondly, Hon. Peregrine Widdrington, son of William Widdrington, 3rd Baron Widdrington and Hon. Alathea Fairfax, in November 1733.1 She died on 25 September 1754.1
After her marriage, Mary Maria Winifred Francisca Sherburne was styled as Duchess of Norfolk on 26 May 1709. From 26 May 1709, her married name became Howard. From November 1733, her married name became Widdrington.1
