Captain John Brooke was born on 2 October 1887.1 He was the son of Sir George Frederick Brooke, 1st Bt. and Emily Alma Barton.1 He married Margaret Winifred Arnold Tothill, daughter of Colonel Francis Tothill, on 14 June 1918.1 He died on 13 March 1974 at age 86.1
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.)1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was Chief Constable of the R.M. Police between 1936 and 1946.1 He lived at Hart's Gorse, Beddingham, Lewes, Sussex, EnglandG.2

Margaret Winifred Arnold Tothill also went by the nick-name of Midge.1 From 14 June 1918, her married name became Brooke.1 She was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1971.1
