David Robertson-Macdonald was born on 29 September 1764.1 He was the son of Reverend William Robertson and Mary Nisbet.1,2 He married Margarita Macdonald, Lady of Kinlochmoidart, daughter of Alexander Macdonald, 5th of Kinlochmoidart and Susannah Campbell, on 2 October 1799.3 He died on 7 September 1845 at age 80.1
He was given the name of David Robertson at birth.1 He gained the rank of officer in the 92nd Regiment.1 His name was legally changed to David Robertson-Macdonald when his wife inherited the Kinloch Moidartfrom her brother, Donald.1 He gained the rank of officer in the 23rd Regiment.1 He was Deputy Adjutant-General of Ceylon between 1801 and 1803.1
