Convoy HX 75 - warsailors.com (original) (raw)

CONVOY HX 75 (Will be updated - please compare with A. Hague's listing for this convoy at ships in all HX convoys. See also HX escorts).

Convoy HX 75 Cruising Order
Departed Halifax on Sept. 21-1940 and arrived Liverpool on Oct. 7 (Arnold Hague says 56 ships).

Received, with thanks, from Roger Griffiths (his source: Public Records Office, Kew).
Details on Bermuda portion were received from Tony Cooper (same source).

B = Ships joining from Bermuda (sailed Sept. 20). Note that it looks like there's a document missing for the Bermuda portion; I believe that all ships with a B station number in this table probably joined from Bermuda, while those with an A number (and possibly a few others as well) probably joined from Sydney, C.B. Note also that many of the ships appear to have moved to other stations later on, but I've left them in their original stations here, as the original document is rather messy and difficult to decipher in places.

*This is probably a misspelling of the Norwegian Taranger.

**Solferino has been given a B number in this form, but according to her Voyage Record for this period, she started out from Sydney, C.B. on Sept. 21.

Some of the ships in this convoy had previously been cancelled from HX 74.

Note that Kantara has been crossed out in the document for the Bermuda portion, perhaps she joined from Halifax?

These were also in the Bermuda portion, but did not join the main convoy ("to be sent to Halifax to await orders"):
Davanger (sunk when in HX 77, see Davanger - convoy will be added), Jenny (both Norw), and Miralda (shows up again in HX 81).

The following were scheduled, but did not sail:
Queen Adelaide (see HX 76), Salacia (see HX 79) and Shirvan (see HX 78). Additionally, there's a note in connection with HX 76, saying that the Norwegian Mosli had been cancelled from HX 75, but she's not mentioned in the documents available to me for this convoy.

Note also that Baron Yarborough, sailing in Convoy SC 5, is said to have come from HX 75, as are Sheaf Mount, Harmala and Wisla in SC 6.
