Norwegian Victims of Pinguin - Norwegian Merchant Fleet 1939-1945 (original) (raw)

Pelagos Crew List:

See the first link above for details on the capture of the Norwegian whaling fleet.

The majority of these men were repatriated to Norway in May-1941 on board the German D/S Donau. But it seems that some of them may have remained in a prison camp in France. I've been unable to find more details on this. The list below was found in "Sjøforklaringer fra 2. verdenskrig", Volume I (Maritime Declarations from WW II), Norwegian Maritime Museum. Most of these names have a notation saying "Sent home to Norway", others have no notations at all, and I'm wondering if the latter group remained in a camp? To distinguish them I've placed a C? behind their names (all the others are said to have been sent home). The man denoted *, Baker Thorstein Johansen is commemorated at the mermorial for seamen in Stavern, Norway (external link), which says some of Pelagos' crew died in a camp in France. However, the book "Våre falne", which lists Norwegian WW II casualties, states he died on the train on Apr. 18-1941, near Saumur, while being transportet to a German camp. Buried at Sorther.

A number of the names had a notation saying "Whaler Star 14" next to them. What this means I'm not sure, but I believe it must mean that they served on Pelagos' whale catcher by that name, and I have, therefore, taken them out and listed them separately under Star XIV further down on this page.

(Since I'm rather unfamiliar with whaling terminology, some of these titles might seem a little peculiar).

Star Whale Catchers - Crew Lists

See the this page for details on the capture of the Norwegian whaling fleet.

Star XIV:

Repatriated to Norway. As mentioned in my text to Pelagos at the top of this page, these men are listed among the crew for Pelagos, with a notation saying they were "repatriated to Norway - Whale Catcher Star 14". I'm not entirely sure what this means, whether they were in fact sent to Norway aboard Star XIV, which later became Kriegsmarine's UJ 1107 (ii), then UJ 1215 (ii), or whether they were the original crew of Star XIV. Either way, I've chosen to list them separately.
