Sale: CNG 69, Lot: 1056. Closing Date: Jun 08, 2005. CILICIA, Aegeae. Augustus, with Julius Caesar. 27 BC-14 AD. AE 28mm 12.35 g. Dated CY 99(?) (50/1 AD). Bare head of Augustus right. AIGEAIWN [THC I]ERAC K[AI AV]TONOMOV, bare head of Julius Caesar right; QL (?) above PAR monogram in left field. Cf. RPC I 4036; cf. SNG Levante 1691-1692; SNG France -. Apparently unpublished with this date and monogram. ($500) Early provincial coinage of Aegeae is very rare and this issue proves to be very enigmatic. Dated, our coin is a type struck during the reigns of both Gaius and Claudius. But the identity of the emperor is the subject of debate. Ziegler (Stdtisches Prestige.., p. 17), suggests Alexander III of Macedonia and Julius Caesar as the city founders. But our coin shows a bare head with features similar to Augustus. 575,575, 575,661.25, 465.75, 316.25, C$718.75, A$747.5, on June 8, 2005. Used by permission of CNG, www.cngcoins.com
