Undated Portrait PhotoThis section provides a brief history of Black pioneer settlement in Alberta and includes insights into the social and political conditions affecting immigration during the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition, there is a section devoted to race relations in the United States during the 19th century. The events of this turbulent era had a direct impact on Black emigration.

Divided chronologically, the History section affords readers an in-depth look at Black Pioneer settlement in Alberta and an analysis of social developments decade by decade—from early settlement in Alberta through the events of the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the postwar era.

Finally, the last section is dedicated to contemporary society, with particular emphasis on the ways in which members of the Black Pioneers Descendants' Society are preserving, maintaining, and affirming their Black Pioneer heritage.
