EPHESOS HONOURS MELANTHIOS OF THEANGELA

Melanthios was an officer appointed by king Lysimachos to command a garrison in the territory of Ephesos. For the date and historical context of the inscription, see G.M.Rogers, "The Mysteries of Artemis of Ephesos", page 81 ( Google Books ).

It was resolved by the council and the people, as proposed by Philainetos; since Melanthios, who was appointed by the king to guard Phygela, has continually shown all goodwill and zeal, and has taken care concerning the defence of the place and of the citizens who are dwelling in Phygela, and with all goodwill and zeal has aided the neopoiai who were sent by the city for the sacrifices at Phygela; and concerning these matters the neopoiai have made a formal report and have spoken to the council, describing the goodwill and zeal of Melanthios; therefore it is resolved by the council to grant to Melanthios of Theangela, the son of Hermias, citizenship on an equal and similar basis, both for himself and for his descendants; and to crown him with a golden crown, and to announce the award of the crown in the theatre at the Dionysia. He shall have access to the council and the people second only to sacred and royal matters. The essenes shall allot him to a tribe and a 'thousand'. The neopoiai shall inscribe this decree in the temple of Artemis, so that all may know that the people of Ephesos honours those who show zeal on its behalf.

He was allotted to the tribe of Bembine and the 'thousand' of Nikeus.
