The prominent setting of this statue in the theatre at Magnesia is discussed by J.Ma, "Statues and Cities", pp.137-138 ( Google Books ). According to Strabo ( 14.648 ), Anaxenor was a favourite of M. Antonius.
The council and the people honour Anaxenor, son of Anaxikrates, citharode, on account of his own virtue, and his excellence in his art.
This is [indeed] a fine thing, to listen to a bard
[Such as] this man is, like unto the gods in his voice.
