Two Iron Age Swords
from Day's Lock, Little Wittenham

In 1960, dredging in the Thames, below Day's Lock at Little Wittenham, produced an exceptional number of interesting objects. Amongst Iron Age spearheads and pottery were also two iron sword blades. A fine ornamental bronze chape was corroded to the tip of one which, after cleaning, revealed traces of a wooden scabbard on oneside. It had received two small repairs in ancient times, using thin bronze plate and rivets.
