Donnington Hospital
Shaw-cum-Donnington, Berkshire
The Donnington Hosital, a group of almshouses for the less well-off retired members of Berkshire and Oxfordshire society, was founded in 1393 by Sir Richard Abberbury of Donnington Castle. It is the oldest charity in Berkshire and the 23rd oldest in the country. The current courtyard building dates from a refoundation by the Earl of Nottingham in 1602. Nearby the complex was massively extended in the 1930s and work continues with additional almshouses at Bucklebury and Iffley.
