Wildcats Race Over North Carolina 83-44
Walter Hirsch Counts 18 Points, 16 in First-Half Play
Kentucky's Wildcat basketeers brushed North Carolina aside last night, 83-44, to rack up their 77th straight Alumni gymnasium victory and their seventh win in a row this season.
In recording their ninth win in 10 starts this season, Coach Adolph Rupp's boys snatched a three-point lead in the first three minutes of play and maintained a safe advantage throughout.
At halftime the Kentuckians were breezing in front, 45-20, largely through the scoring efforts of Walt Hirsch, junior forward. Hirsch poured in eight field goals in the opening stanza. Although he played only briefly in the second half and added only one more basket to his total, Hirsch garnered game high-point honors with 18 points.
Bill Spivey, seven-foot Kentucky center, turned in another good game, both offensively and defensively. The towering Georgia Pine's hook-shot was working to perfection and he finished his night's work with 16 points to his credit. On the defense, he blocked numerous shots by North Carolina pivot-men and his showing on the whole was vastly improved over his initial effort on the same floor a month ago.
Capt. Dale Barnstable, performing at both guard and forward, racked up 11 points while Lefty Jim Line, although hampered by four personal fouls in the first 12 minutes of play, chalked up 10.
Hugo Kappler, junior forward, and Benton Bennett, senior center who entered the game as a substitute, shared high-point honors for the White Phantoms. Each tallied 11 points. Capt. Sherman Nearman, senior pivotman, was next in line with eight.
It was Kentucky's first win over a North Carolina team but it was only the third time the Cats ever have played a Tar Heel aggregation.
The Ruppmen scored on the opening tipoff, Line dropping in a crip and adding a free throw when he was fouled on the shot by John Tsantes. Two free tosses by Spivey made it 5-0 before Kappler tabbed the Tar Heels' first point on a gratis heave. Kentucky pulled ahead, 15-3, at the four-minute mark.
A long shot by Charlie Thorne gave North Carolina its first field goal after four minutes.
With 12 seconds remaining in the first half, Hirsch brought the crowd of 2,200 to its feet with two quick stolen-ball crips.
Playing the second half was a mere formality, and although both teams hit a better percentage of shots, the performance of each was more ragged during the final period.
Kentucky wound up with a 39.7 percentage with 35 successful heaves out of 88 shots. North Carolina hit 16 out of 66 for a 24.2 mark.
Both Rupp and Coach Tom Scott used every man dressed for the game. All the Cats with the exception of Roger Layne, entered the scoring column but three North Carolina players failed to tally.
The Kentuckians next swing into action Saturday night when they meet Tennessee at Knoxville. They move onto Atlanta Monday to play Georgia Tech and wind up their tour against Georgia at Athens a week from tonight.
