The race: For the 66th time Pau hosted a Tour stage start. The peloton was down to 172 riders with Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) and Jacopo Guarnieri (Lotto-Dstny) out with broken collarbones after crashing yesterday.

The official start was given at 1:24. Attacks went off at the gun with TotalEnergies rider Pierre Latour getting clear by kilometer three. With many riders with high ambitions for this, the first mountain stage, Latour was allowed a gap of only 12 seconds by kilometer 12.

There were a couple of crashes early on, both Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) and Dylan Teuns (Israel-Premier Tech) fell. Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal Quick-Step), who crashed yesterday, was dropped after 14 kilometers. Teammate Michael Morkov brought him back to the peloton.

Latour's adventure off the front ended at kilometer 19.

And again, Jakobsen was dropped. Other sprinters were also already in trouble, including Mark Cavendish and Phil Bauhaus. The did manage to finish the stage at the back of the pack.

Tadej Pogacar tried to get away, but he was soon caught and at kilometer 23 it was all together.

With 50 kilometers ridden, there were three riders were in front: Wout van Aert, Victor Campanaerts and Mads Pedersen. Following them at 32 seconds was a 33-man chasing group with Jai Hindley and Julian Alaphilippe and the peloton a further 2 minutes back.

As the day's monster climb, the Col du Soudet, began to bite, Pedersen, Laporte and Soler were caught and dropped with Van Aert & Campenaerts in front with a 25 seconds lead over the big chase group. The peloton was 3 minutes 15 seconds back.

Five kilometers from the summit of the Col du Soudet, Wout van Aert and Victor Campanaerts were 25 seconds ahead of the big Jai Hindley chase group, which lost about twelve riders on the way up the hill.

About a kilometer and a half before the summit Felix Gall (Ag2r-Citroen) attacked. He passed van Aert and Campanaerts and was first over the top of the big mountain. He was followed by Daniel Martinez and Giulio Ciccone.

Felix Gall attacks near the summit of the Col du Soudet.

A group of riders came together after cresting the Soudet: Omar Fraile, Daniel Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost), Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Jai Hindley, Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), Felix Gall (Ag2r-Citröen), Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) and Krists Neilands (Israel-PremierTech). They were quickly joined by Wout van Aert, Tiesj Benoot (both Jumbo-Visma) and Gregor Mühlberger (Movistar), making a 14-man lead group. Make that 17 riders, Chaves, Alaphilippe and Berthet bridged up to the lead group.

With 53 kilometers to go Krists Nielands (Israel-Premier Tech) attacked and soon had a 25-second lead over the big breakaway group. He was the first to reach the foot of the Col d'Ichère with Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilppe chasing.

Nielands was first over the Col d'Ichère with van Aert second. Soon Nielands, van Aert and Alaphilippe were together and with 28 kilometers to go they were 25 seconds ahead of the Jai Hindley group.

Four kilometers later the trio was caught.

On the day's final big climb, the 7.7-kilometer Col de Marie Blanque, Jai Hindley and Felix Gall attacked while further back van Aert was dropped from the lead group.

With 20 kilometers to go Jai Hindley took off by himself in search of a stage win and a yellow jersey. Further back Adam Yates was dropped by Pogacar, Vingegaard and Kuss. One kilometer from the summit Vingegaard went clear.

At the top of the Marie-Blanque Jai Hindley was first, alone. Then Felix Gall at 15 seconds, Giulio Ciccone, Emanuel Buchmann, Jonas Vingegaard and Jack Haig at 1 minute, 40 seconds. Tadej Pogacar at 2 minutes.

With 10 kilometers to go Hindley was 50 seconds ahead of Gall.

Five kilometers from the finish the Vingegaard group with Buchmann, Ciccone & Gall was now just 40 seconds behind Hindley while Pogacar was at 1 minute 50 seconds.

Hindley made it stick! He won alone in Laurens. He was followed in 32 seconds later by Giulio Ciccone, Felix Gall and Emanuel Buchmann. Two seconds later Jonas Vingegaard crossed the line.

Here's the race organizer's stage five report:

After Phil Anderson, Stuart O’Grady, Bradley McGee, Robbie McEwen, Simon Gerrans, Cadel Evans and Rohan Dennis, Jai Hindley became the eighth Australian in the yellow jersey as he soloed to victory in Laruns after making a smart move in a numerous breakaway from far out on his Tour de France debut! Jonas Vingegaard bettered arch-rival Tadej Pogecar in the first Pyrenean stage.

PIERRE LATOUR FIRST IN ACTION
The start proper of stage 5 was given at 13.24 to 172 riders. Non-starters: Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) and Jacopo Guarnieri (Lotto-Dstny). Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) was the first rider to go clear at km 3. He was brought back at km 19 as the peloton remained very active with many breakaway attempts. 36 riders gathered at the front at km 28: Tiesj Benoot, Christophe Laporte, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Felix Grossschartner, Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Omar Fraile, Daniel Martínez (Ineos Grenadiers), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Esteban Chaves, Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost), Julian Alaphilippe, Kasper Asgreen, Rémi Cavagna (Soudal-Quick Step), Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Jai Hindley, Emanuel Buchmann, Patrick Konrad (Bora-Hansgrohe), Giulio Ciccone, Juan Pedro Lopez, Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Clément Berthet, Felix Gall, Aurélien Paret Peintre (Ag2r-Citröen), Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), Matteo Jorgenson, Gregor Mühlberger (Movistar), Chris Hamilton (Dsm-firmenich), Hugo Houle, Krists Neilands (Israel-PremierTech), Chris Juul Jensen (Jayco-AlUla), Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa-Samsic), Victor Campenaerts, Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny), Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan), Torstein Traeen (Uno-X), Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies). This group was formed after Cavagna and Mühlberger broke away at km 24.

THE STRONG SHOWING OF PEDERSEN, VAN AERT AND CAMPENAERTS BEFORE COL DU SOUDET
Four riders escaped from that group at km 45: Coquard, Pedersen, Van Aert and Campenaerts. Coquard won the intermediate sprint at km 48 and sat up, leaving a trio at the front while UAE Team Emirates seized the reins of the peloton, two minutes behind. At the beginning of the ascent to col du Soudet, the first HC climb of the 110th Tour de France, Pedersen let Van Aert and Campenaerts at the front while Lopez was pulling the chasing group at the service of Ciccone. The Belgian duo got reeled in 2.5km before the summit. Gall attacked one kilometre further. He reached the top alone in the lead while Martinez outsprinted Ciccone for the second place. 17 riders gathered together at the front when Neilands rode away solo with 53.5km to go.

HINDLEY BY HIMSELF WITH 20KM TO GO
Alaphilippe and Van Aert caught up with Neilands at Col d’Ichère (cat. 3) with 38km remaining. At the bottom of Marie-Blanque, the second major climb of the day, the deficit of the peloton was 3 minutes. Van Aert, Alaphilippe and Neilands were reeled in with 24km to go. 4km before the summit, Hindley attacked with Gall. Hindley went solo 20km before the finish. Vingegaard also attacked 1km before the summit and Pogacar could go with him. Hindley crested Marie-Blanque alone in the lead and kept going till he crossed the finish alone with a great emotion. Vingegaard recovered enough time to reach the line 34’’ after the Australian who has 47 seconds lead over the defending champion in the overall ranking while Pogacar is 1’40’’ adrift.
