Weather at the finish city of Belleville-en-Beaujolais at 1:50 PM, local time: 26C (79F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

Rated ascents:

The race: Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal Quick-Step) did not start after he finished 16th at Moulins in a bunch sprint yesterday. He said, “Due to my stage 4 crash, and after discussions with the team, we decided it’s better for me to stop my Tour de France journey here. At this point it seems impossible for me to get to Paris, as I am not recovering, and my body is not healing from the crash. I’m very sad to leave the Grande Boucle, because I had big goals for this race and I wanted to be at my best with the team. I will now take some time to recover and clear my head, and hopefully be back at my best later this season.”

That left 168 riders to start at 1:26.

Mads Pedersen attacked at the gun but was brought back about three kilometers later. After that, lots of riders tried their luck. At the back of the peloton, with the climbing beginning almost immediately after the start, Peter Sagan and Caleb Ewan were dropped.

After 24 kilometers of racing and many attempts at getting away, the peloton was still intact, though 40 riders had been dropped. Two kilometers later David De La Cruz (Astana Qazaqstan) and Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ) crashed hard. Sadly, De La Cruz had to be taken away in an ambulance. That made three Astana Qazaqstan riders who had crashed out of this Tour after Mark Cavendish and Luis Leon Sanchez.

Finally, around 35 kilometers into the stage a break formed after Matteo Jorgenson attacked. He was joined by Omar Fraile and Mathieu Burgaudeau. Nope, they were caught.

Then Wout van Aert gave it a shot, but he was rounded up after being away for eight kilometers.

Then an attempt was made by Mattias Skjelmose and Wilco Kelderman. They got a gap and were soon joined by Marc Soler.

Those three were caught as well after about 60 kilometers of racing.

At kilometer 65 Dylan Teuns and Tiesj Benoot took off. Mads Pedersen soon joined them.

The front of the peloton remained active with other riders wanting to get away, and after kilometer 70 a new group of eleven were off the front: Benoot, Amador, Pedersen, Van der Poel, Ion Izagirre, Guerreiro, Jorgenson, Teuns, Campenaerts, Burgaudeau and Pinot. Soon Guillaume Martin and Tobias Halland Johannessen got up to them with Julian Alaphilppe chasing, trying to get up to the break.

The day's break before they were joined by Julian Alaphilippe and Jasper Stuyven.

Alalphilippe was joined by Jasper Stuyven and working together they made it up to the break, which was now 15 riders strong.

With 63 kilometers to go the break was 3 minutes 22 seconds in front of the main peloton containing Yellow Jersey'd Jonas Vingegaard. Another group with KOM Neilson Powless was a further three minutes back.

Mathieu van der Poel and Andrey Amador took off from the break after the descent of the Col de la Casse Froide and soon had a 15 second gap. With 47 kilometers to go that gap had grown to 40 seconds.

While climbing the day's penultimate mountain, the second-category Col de la Croix Montmain, van der Poel dropped Amador.

So, one km before the top of Côte de Montmain, van der Poel who grabbed a bidon from his father Adrie (who won 6 Classics and 2 Tour stages) on the road side, was 30 seconds ahead of Andrey Amador (EF Education-EasyPost), Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Guillaume Martin, Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), Ruben Guerreiro, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Dylan Teuns (Israel-PremierTech), Tobias Halland Johanessen (Uno-X), Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies). Three stragglers: Alaphilippe, Pedersen and Stuyven. The Yellow Jersey group was three minutes back.

With 30 kilometers to go Thibaut Pinot and Matteo Jorgensen bridged up to van der Poel. The peloton, which had been split, was whole again.

Tiesj Benoot, Guillaume Martin, Ion Izagirre, Ruben Guerreiro and Mathieu Burgaudeau then also made it up to the van der Poel group.

On the day's final categorized climb, the second category Col de la Croix Rosier, Ion Izagirre attacked the break and was first over the mountain.

Meanwhile, van der Poel couldn't stay with the break. The Yellow Jersey group, being pulled by INEOS Grenadiers, was four minutes 10 seconds behind Izagirre.

With 22 kilometers to go Izagirre was 34 seconds ahead of his former breakaway companions.

Izagirre kept on keepin' on. With 6 kilometers to go he had a one minute lead.

Three kilometers later Matteo Jorgensen and Mathieu Burgaudeau left the break to go for second and third places.

And, after 31 kilometers alone and off the front, Ion Izagirre has won the stage. Bravo!

Mathieu Burgaudeau beat Matteo Jorgenson for second.

Here's the race organizer's stage 12 summary:

Inspired by the end of the 15-year drought for Cofidis and the end of the 5-year drought for Spain in terms of stage wins at the Tour de France, Ion Izagirre, 34, claimed his second stage win in Belleville-en-Beaujolais, seven years after his first one in Morzine as he emulated his team-mate Victor Lafay and his compatriot Pello Bilbao, a Basque rider like him who started with an exceptional motivation in Bilbao. Jonas Vingegaard retained the yellow jersey in an action packed stage in the vineyards.

CLASSICS SPECIALISTS ON THE MOVE
The start proper of stage 12 was given at 13.27 to 168 riders. One non-starter: Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal-Quick Step).

Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was the first on the attack but no one wanted to go with him as he’d be hard to beat from a breakaway group. He was brought back by the compact bunch after 3km and that led to successive and unfruitful attacks for more than an hour. Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) were among the specialists of the big classics eager to break away. David De La Cruz (Astana) crashed out in a downhill to St-Vincent-de-Reins (km 28). At km 45, Van Aert managed to go clear but he was brought back after 8km alone in the lead.

15 RIDERS IN THE LEAD
A strong leading group was eventually formed at halfway into stage 12 by 13 riders in several waves: Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Andrey Amador (EF Education-EasyPost), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Guillaume Martin, Ion Izagirre (Cofidis), Ruben Guerreiro, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Dylan Teuns (Israel-PremierTech), Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny), Tobias Halland Johanessen (Uno-X) and Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies). Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) came across on the line of the intermediate sprint at Régnié-Durette where Pedersen scored 20 points in first position. The peloton was divided in three groups with the likes of Sepp Kuss, Mikel Landa, Emanuel Buchmann and Louis Meintjes among the stragglers, which inclined AG2R-Citroën to pace the yellow jersey group in order to get Felix Gall move up on GC. Van der Poel and Amador rode away from the leading group with 55km to go. The Dutchman sped up and continued solo up the côte de Montmain.

IZAGIRRE ALONE IN THE LAST 31KM
32km before the end, Pinot and Jorgenson caught up with Van der Poel. It became an 8-man group with the reinforcement of Martin, Ion Izagirre, Benoot, Guerreiro and Burgaudeau. Izagirre rode away by himself 31km before the finish. After the Kuss group caught up with the yellow jersey group, Ineos Grenadiers set the pace of that main peloton as Pinot was threatening the fourth place overall of Carlos Rodriguez. Izagirre reached an advantage of 50’’ with 15km to go. He forged on as the cooperation in the chasing group wasn’t great. Jorgenson and Burgaudeau attacked with 3km to go to round out the stage podium. The yellow jersey peloton crossed the line 4’14’’ after the Spanish winner.
