his simplified genealogy examines the main line and northern kingdom of Powys. In the 9th century Powys was joined with the kingdom of Gwynedd. Powys later broke from Gwynedd, then split into northern and southern kingdoms in the mid 12th century. The northern kingdom was ruled by Madog, while the southern kingdom was ruled by his brother Gruffydd, sons of Maredudd ap Bleddyn. To simplify the presentation here, the line of descent has been placed in the center of the page and is not necessarily an indication of birth order. (Kings and princes are shown in capital letters)
