While Orange Line was truncated at Roosevelt over Memorial Day weekend 2003 due to Harrison Curve reconstruction, there would've been no service on the Inner Loop. To compensate for this and aid in circulation of passengers around the Loop, a shuttle was operated all weekend with Orange Line equipment, as seen on Library on May 26, 2003, with car 3378 leading the 4-car consist. The Illinois Department of Health wrapped six cars as part of an antismoking campaign, for which they have also bought a lot of station ad space. In each two-car set, one is pinkish salmon colored (representing a healthy lung) and the other is a light gray (representing a diseased one). The cars carry antismoking messages on the sides. The CTA's first Halloween Train, which carried the title "Chicagoween", was the first ad wrap to be for internal CTA purposes rather than for a private advertiser. Only the #1 front end of 3254 was wrapped, with the rest of the car exterior left "naked". The front had a yellow background with black shapes and shading that created the appearance of leaves, branches, and other "spooky" foliage. Centered on the front door was an orange "jack-o'-lantern" pumpkin. The wrap, seen here on the Loop in October 1998, was very short-lived, having been removed only a month after being applied.(Photo by John F. Kuczaj)

The Midway Shops are capable of doing more heavy overhaul work than most others on the system, besides Skokie Shops. As such, the Brown Line 3200-series cars are being cycled on and off the Orange Line ten at a time as both lines' units are put through their quarter-life "C" level rehab. As ridership on the Brown Line increased in the mid-1990s and more cars were needed to cover the service, some 3200-series cars were taken off the Yellow Line, subtracted from the spare ratio, and reassigned to the Ravenswood. The portion of the Yellow Line that runs at-grade off overhead catenary is perhaps one of the best living memories of the old North Shore Line interurban that once shared these tracks with the "L". Unfortunately, the frequent grade crossings along this portion sometimes cause problems as trains fly back and forth at high speeds.
