Description of the flag

The Argentine state of Formosa has recently adopted a new flag, its first. The field is celeste, like the national flag, the green laurels crossing the flag represent the Tropic of Capricorn.

The flag was adopted by the resolution 36 of the provincial parlament in 1991.03.15. It also includes a white triangle with nine yellow stars. (Stars are four-pointed according to Perazzo and five pointed according to Dur�n.) Ratio 6:11. This design was chosen by a competition in February 14th, 1991, and was created by Maria Beatriz Saez and Walter Wullimburgh. The white triangle symbolizes the �Southern Cone� [Argentina, Chile and Paraguay] between both oceans, the green lines are the Tropic of Capricorn. The stars stand for thr four administrative subdivisions of the province.

It seems most people agree the triangle is in the fly and that there are nine yellow stars in a ring in the white triangle. There are only seven pairs of leaves and the stars are four pointed (all upright).

FUNDAMENTOS SIMBOL�GICOS

La propuesta b�sica de este dise�o surge de la privilegiada ubicaci�n de la Provincia de Formosa en el Cono Sur Americano y el rol protag�nico que le cabe en el marco de la integraci�n regional y continental. Tomado �ste como tema �nico de la propuesta dado que caracteriza a la Provincia en su importancia geo-pol�tica y asegura su proyecci�n y permanencia en el tiempo. Se intenta reflejar la presencia de Formosa en el coraz�n del Continente subrayando el proyecto de integraci�n a trav�s de su extensa frontera como invariante hist�rica. El pa�o partido en tres campos representa el Cono Sur abrazado por los oc�anos, expresado en los colores celeste y blanco de nuestra Bandera Nacional. Es de destacar para una mejor comprensi�n de la ubicaci�n geogr�fica de la Provincia en el pa�s, el ser atravesada por el Tr�pico de Capricornio. Esto se ha marcado mediante una guirnalda de laureles que cruza todo el pa�o en sentido longitudinal. La estructura institucional de la Provincia se sintetiza en nueve estrellas dispuestas en el c�rculo a la altura del Tr�pico, componentes ya presentes en el Escudo Provincial. Dos premisas importantes condicionaron el dise�o, la primera, la condici�n de toda bandera de ser le�da indistintamente por ambas caras, lo cual restringi� el empleo de formas y textos; y la segunda, la simplicidad de trazado presentado en su reproducci�n a nivel escolar e institucional.
