Description
From photos of the National Police Memorial ceremony, the flag of the South Australia Police at the is basically a [British] blue ensign with the police badge fimbriated in white in the fly. The paraded flag does not seem to differ in design.
Herman FMY, 25 February 2007
The badge (clearer at the SA Police website) shows the "piping shrike" of the state flag on a white disk inside a blue circle with the words SOUTH AUSTRALIA POLICE in white. Around the disk is a wattle wreath and a crown at the top.
Jonathan Dixon, 14 September 2005
The version a white silhouette around the badge is the official version of the flag. This flag has been official since 1993.

Variant with badge on a disk

A version with the badge placed on a disk is also manufactured and used as a variant. The extra large disk is intentional on my part as the flag in a photo that I have contains the larger disk.

Erroneous depiction with no fimbriation for the badge

A version with the badge superimposed directly onto the ensign's blue background has been published many times in credible books and magazines. However, according to SA Police themselves, the flag is erroneous.

Lance Pennon
Having looked at the National Police Memorial photos website, I can now summarize the patterns of lance pennons used by mounted police in each Australian state and territory:
South Australia: dark blue above white, with a blue disc (1/2 the pennon width) at the hoist (centred at 1/6 the pennon length) bearing the SA Police emblem in full colours above the name "SOUTH AUSTRALIA POLICE" in white sans-serif letters. Proportions 1:3; swallowtail 1/3 the pennon length.

I drew the 1981 to 1993 South Australia Police flag for the most recent Crux Australis, Vol. 29, No. 3 / 119 - July-Sept. 2016 contribution, for an article by Ralph Bartlett about police flags throughout Australia.
From what we can tell, the 1981 to 1993 flag was double sided relative to the badge, and it read correctly on both sides of the flag.
