This province includes the city of Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, and a few neighbouring cities and communities, not to be confused with the Province of Sofija that has almost the same name, but it is not the same province. Before, this province was called "City of Sofija Province" in order to avoid misunderstandings, but now it is called simply "Sofija Province".

According to the decision of the Botevgrad Municipality Council of May 2000, the flag of the municipality will be plain green with coat of arms in the centre. The new so called "coat of arms" was adopted later in Nov 2001 and since then the flag exists in full compliance with its legal description.
Stoyan Antonov, 19 February 2005
Botevgrad is situated at a 47-km.-distance from Sofia - the capital of the Republic of Bulgaria. Botevgrad and its hinterland are located in a picturesque elliptical valley with a total area of 506.6 sq. km. The municipality covers parts of the Western Stara Planina mountain - Razhana, Mourgash, Billo and Golyama Planina and some parts of the Northern Balkan. Prohoda Vitinya or Vitinya Pass, connecting Northern Bulgaria with Southern Bulgaria, and the proximity of the capital contribute to its strategic location. Botevgrad municipality borders the following municipalities: Pravets, Etropoleh, Gorna Malina, Elin Pelin, Svogeh, Mezdra and Roman.
