About the Flag of Paulo Afonso

The flag, approved by law no. 161/70, of 20 January 1970, is a red-white-red vertical triband with the coat of arms on the center. The coat of arms shows a star, a wavy saltire, an electrical transmission tower (evidently signifying the Angiquinho hydroelectric plant at Paulo Afonso Falls, the first hydroelectric plant in Brazil's northeast, inaugurated in 1913), and a white wavy bar in base, probably representing the Rio São Francisco, the principal geographic feature of the municipality.
