The municipality of São João do Ivaí (10,386 inhabitants in 2018; 35,333 ha) is located 430 km north-west of Curitiba. The municipality is composed of the districts of São João do Ivaí (seat), Ubaúna, and Santa Luzia da Alvorada and Luar.

São João do Ivaí was established in 1945; three years later, Orozimbo Martins established a small shop also used as a credit bank by the region's colonists, and soon the center of the emerging community. The first mass was celebrated in December 1948 by father João Coling, from Pitanga, in the newly erected chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist Marriages; baptisms were celebrated in Guarita.
In 1954, José Martins Vieira aka Bispo Vieira, acquired Orozimbo Martins' assets and renamed the place to São João da Ocalina, as a tribute to her mother; the population was not pleased by the change.
The district of São João do Ivaí was established, as part of the municipality of Ivaiporã, by State Law No. 4,859 promulgated on 28 April 1964, to be elevated a municipality by State Law No. 4,859 promulgated on 26 June 1964. The municipality was inaugurated on 20 December 1964.
