The municipality of Alvorada (207,392 inhabitants in 2016; 7,081 ha) is located 20 km east of Porto Alegre.

Alvorada was established as Passo de Feij�, a district of Viam�o established by Municipal Law No. 216 promulgated on 22 September 1952. The municipality of Alvorada was established by State Law No. 5,026 promulgated on 17 September 1965.
The name of Alvorada ("Dawn") was coined by a member of the Emancipation Commission, referring to people leaving the place early in the morning to go to Porto Alegre for work, and to the Palace of Dawn, the official residence of the President of Brazil inaugurated in Bras�lia on 30 June 1958.
