The municipal of Candel�ria (31,541 inhabitants in 2016; 93,493 ha) is located 180 km north of Porto Alegre.
Candel�ria was established in 1862 by Jo�o Kochenborger and Jacob Welsh, the sons of German immigrants established in Rio Pardo. They built an aqueduct to supply water from stream Grande, used to power a sawmill and a maize and wheat mill.
The parish of Nossa Senhora de Candel�ria was established on 9 May 1876; in the beginning of the 20th century, the town counted c. 150 inhabitants. The municipality of Candel�ria was established on 7 July 1925.

Candel�ria is the namesake of the saurischian dinosaur Guaibasaurus candelariensis, identified in 1999.
