The municipality of Cangu�u (55,956 inhabitant in 2016; 35,251 ha) is located 275 km south-east of Porto Alegre.
Cangu�u was established on 1 January 1800, as Capela Curada de Nossa Senhora da Concei��o de Cangu�u, in the place known as Cangu�u Velho (Old Cangu�u). The "vila" of Cangu�u, separated from Piratini, was established by Law No. 340 promulgated on 28 January 1857, and inaugurated on 27 June 1857.

The flag of Cangu�u is composed of a rectangle horizontally divided into three equal parts, green, red and yellow. The flag is charged in the center with a white circle inscribing the municipal coat of arms.
The coat of arms is composed of a Portuguese shield horizontally divided into two fields.
The upper field, white, is charged with a red cross, recalling the Portuguese from Azores who colonized the area. Beneath the cross, a blue wavy stripe represents Cangu�u's hill. In its lower part, a green stripe represents agriculture.
The lower field, all white, is charged with a spotted jaguar, representing the origin of the name Cangu�u, surmounting "CANGU�U" written in a semi-circular pattern.
The shield is superimposed to two crossed lances, recalling the Ragamuffin heroes.
Beneath the shield a red scroll is inscribed "1812 Justi�a � Igualdade � Perfei��o 1857". The scroll ends with a wheat spike and a maize cob, present-day's main products of local agriculture.
The shield surmounted by a mural crown with three fortified castles and eight crenels. The crown represents the town of Cangu�u.
