The municipality of Cerro Largo (13,289 inhabitants in 2013; 17,767 ha) is located 500 km of Porto Alegre.

Cerro Largo was established on 4 October 1902, as Col�nia Cerro Azul, by German colonists from the region of Montenegro, led by Jesuit Father Maximiliano von Lassberg. Cerro Azul was elevated to the 4th district of S�o Luiz Gonzaga in 1915, to be renamed to Cerro Largo in 1942. The municipality of Cerro Grande was established by State Decree No. 2,519 issued in 15 December 1954, and inaugurated on 28 February 1955.
