The municipality of Cotipor� (3,853 inhabitants in 2019; 17,238 ha) is located 160 km of Porto Alegre and 35 km of Bento Gon�alves.

Cotipor� was established in 1892 by Venetian immigrants, as Monte V�neto. Brazil's first dairy cooperative, Cooperative Trabalho e Progresso, was established in Monte V�neto. Brazil's "father of refrigerated meal industry", A Sul Americana, was also established in Monte V�neto.
The town was renamed in 1939 to Cotipor�, a Tupi-Guarani word meaning "a good place". The municipality of Cotipor� was established by State Law No. 7,652 promulgated on 12 May 1982, separating from Veran�polis, and inaugurated on 1 January 1983.
