Estrela Velha, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) (original) (raw)
The municipality of Estrela Vela (3,660 inhabitants in 2018; 28,167 ha) is located 275 km north-west of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Estrela Vela (seat), Rinco da Estrela, So Luiz and Itaba
Estrela Vela (Old Star) originates in the building in the 1920s of a big commercial house on a hill, visible at a distance. During excavations made to erect the house, a star-shaped shield was found, which was applied to the house's facade.
The place was used as a shelter during the Ragamuffin War, the area being surrounded by water and of difficult access to the enemy. Once peace resumed, the white house with a star was used as a landmark by travelers, being subsequently located on a main road.
The municipality of Estrela Vela was established by State Law No. 10,644 promulgated on 28 December 1995, separating from Arroyo do Tiger, and inaugurated on 1 January 1997.
