Fagundes Varela (1841-1875), born from an affluent family in Rio, preferred literature and bohemian life to law studies, publishing his first poems, "Noturnas", in 1861. His marriage with a circus artist caused a family scandal and increased his poverty. The death of his first son, Emiliano, three-months old, inspired the poem "Cntico do Calvrio". Alcoholism and errance increased, so did his poetical inspiration; he published "O estandarte auriverde" (The gold and green standard) in 1863, "Vozes da Amrica" in 1864 and, the next year, his masterpiece, "Cantos e fantasias", and maintained his bohemian life until his death.
Varela was named protector of chair No. 11 at the Brazilian Academy of Literature by the academy's founder, Lcio de Mendona.
