Faxinal do Soturno, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) (original) (raw)

The municipality of Faxinal do Soturno (6,672 inhabitants; 16,990 ha) is located 220 km of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Faxinal do Soturno and Santos Anjos.

The municipality of Faxinal do Soturno was established by State Law No. 3,711 promulgated on 12 February 1959, separating from Cachoeira do Sul.
The odd epithet "Soturno" (Gloomy) refer to river Soturno. This name of Gloomy River seems today undeserved, since the river supplies water for rice irrigation and energy production. It is believed that the river once formed marshes, especially during the rainy season, which were gloomy and dangerous, therefore the name given to the river.
