The municipality of Fortaleza dos Valos (4,636 inhabitants in 2014; 6(,032 ha) is located 250 km of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Fazenda de los Valos (seat) and Fazenda Colorados (est. by Municipal Law No. 403 promulgated on 4 May 1992).

Fortaleza dos Vales (lit., Ditches' Fortress) is of unknown etymology. some say that Indians dug huge ditches when besieging a Jesuit fortress, while other say that the Fortaleza estate was used as shelter protected by ditches by Republican revolutionaries in 1893.
The place was first settled by Italian colonists coming from Nova Palma and German colonists coming either from Alto Uruguai or Europe.
The district of Fazendas dos Valos was established on 22 November 1951 within Cruz Alta. The municipality of Fazendas de los Valos was established by State Law No. 7,648 promulgated on 3 May 1982 and inaugurated on 31 January 1983.
