The municipality of Novo Machado (3,791 inhabitants in 2016; 21,833 ha) is located 520 km north-west of Porto Alegre, on the border with Argentina, here river Urucuai.

Novo Machado was successively known as Linha Machado, Povoado Machado, Vila Machado, and eventually Novo Machado, but the origin of the place name is unknown.
The municipality of Novo Machado was established by State Law No. 9,555 promulgated on 20 March 1992.
