Ponte Preta, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) (original) (raw)

The municipality of Ponte Preta (1,750 inhabitants in 2010; 10,000 ha) is located 400 km north of Porto Alegre.

Ponte Preta was established around 1910, as Lajeado Grande. To connect the settlement with neighboring Souto Neto and Linha 7, a bridge was erected over river Jupirangava. For the sake of preservation, the wooden bridge was coated with tar; accordingly, its official name, 3 October Bridge, was soon superseded by Black Bridge ("ponte preta").
The municipality of Ponte Preta was established by Municipal Law No. 9,537 promulgated on 20 March 1992.
