The municipality of S�o Jo�o da Urtiga (4,726 ihabitants in 2010; 17,118 ha) is located 400 km north of Porto Alegre.

S�o Jo�o da Urtiga was settled in 1902 by Italian colonists coming from Ant�nio Prado, Veran�polis, Flores da Cunha, Garibaldi and Caxias do Sul, who were subsequently joined by Poles. The place was named for nettles ("urtigas", from Latin "urtica") and for the St John the Baptist parish of Sananduva, to which it belonged at the time.
The municipality of S�o Jo�o da Urtiga was established by State Law No. 8,448 promulgated on 15 November 1988 and inaugurated on 1 January 1989.
