This page says that the arms were granted in 1974, designed by the College of Arms in London, England. It includes the axe as a long used emblem of the University, two heraldic cushions taken from the arms of main founder James William Johnstone, and wolves� heads canting for Wolfville, where the University is located.

The university also uses a more elaborate banner of arms for convocations which displays the contents of the arms counterchanged in white and blue.
