Mont-Saint-Pierre, Quebec (Canada) (original) (raw)

The municipality of the village of Mont-Saint-Pierre (155 inhabitants in 2016; 5,150 ha) is located on the southern shore of river Saint-Lawrence, 140 km north-west of Gasp.

Mont-Saint-Pierre, named for Mt. Saint-Pierre (411 m), was originally known as Rivire--Pierre, as mentioned on the maps drawn by Gdon de Catalogne in 1723 and Pierre Russell in 1861, respectively. Rivire Pierre is listed on the map designed by Joseph Bouchette in 1815.
"Pierre" ("stone") most probably refer to the cliffs, although some believe it refers to surname Peter.
The municipality of the village of Rivire--Pierre, established in 1947, was renamed to Mont-Saint-Pierre on 12 February 1986.
