The municipality
The town of Vaudreuil-Dorion (42,117 inhabitants in 2020; 9,257 ha) is located 30 km west of Montreal on the banks of Ottawa River.
The municipality was established on 16 March 1994 as the merger of the former municipalities of Vaudreuil and Dorion.
Vaudreuil was originally part of the domain of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, which included present-day's Vaudreuil-Dorion, Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac, L'le-Cadieux, Hudson, Saint-Lazare and L'le aux Tourtes, granted in 1702 to Philippe de Rigaud de Vaudreuil (1650-1725; Governor of Nouvelle-France from 1703 to 1725). The domain was hardly settled until its sale in 1765 by Louise-Thrse Fleury de la Gorgendire, on behalf of her husband Franois-Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil (1703-1779; last Governor of Montreal from 1757 to 1760), to Michel Chartier de Lotbinire (1723-1798), who erected a manor and developed agriculture.
The parish of Vaudreuil was established in 1845.
Dorion was established in 1891 as a village, separating from the parish of Vaudreuil, to be incorporated as a town in 1916. Dorion's namesake is Sir Antoine-Amde Dorion (1818-1891), Chief Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench of Quebec, who passed way the year of the establishment of the municipality.

The Flag

The emblem featured on the flag is indeed the graphic signature, composed of the town's logo and of the writing "Vaudreuil-Dorion". The town's logo represents the two former municipalities, Vaudreuil and Dorion, which were merged in 1994 to establish Vaudreuil-Dorion.
Vaudreuil (left emblem)
The green border represents green spaces.
Blue is the symbol of water.
The tree is a symbol of growth, greenness and quality of life.
The arrangement of the leaves recalls on top a "V", for "Vaudreuil". The arrow pattern emphasizes Vaudreuil as a central town.
The tree's background forms a cross, as the symbol of architectural heritage.
Dorion (right emblem)
The symbol forms a "D", first letter of "Dorion"; while its inner part represents Dorion's territory.
The blue color of the "D" recalls water surrounding Dorion. The lines that cross the "D" evoke the quiet water reflections, as a symbol of serenity.
The opening at the top highlights easy access to Dorion. It also symbolizes open-mindedness to every idea that could be of interest for Dorion.
In the center of the "D", the green leaf highlights the significance of the natural environment for the territory. The leaf is divided in six parts representing the six boroughs that compose the town.
