On 1 January 2003 Bonnefontaine, Essert, Montévraz, Oberried, Praroman and Zénauva formed the new commune of Le Mouret.

The commune of Bonnefontaine now includes former communes of Montécu. The flag of Bonnefontaine has been kept at the exception that the cross pattee from the flag of Montécu has been added.

The arms are effectively canting. The mount refers to Monticum (Montécu). The arms are completed with the cross of the hospital of Fribourg which possessed, in days of old, substantial goods in the municipality.
