On 1 January 2009 the communes of Ayer, Chandolin, Grimentz, Saint-Jean, Saint-Luc and Vissoie formed the new commune of Anniviers (see below).

This is the highest year-round inhabited village in Europe (1920 m). Anything higher is evacuated during the winter snows. The peak in the flag is the nearby Bella Tola (3025 m).
