Description of current flag:
The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a red over yellow horizontal bicolour. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flag. Its height is 9/15 of total height.

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (=white) shield is a green oak tree, at its base superimposed by a golden inescutcheon divided by two red, dancetty bars.
Meaning:
According to source the oak tree is typical for the Ammerland. Furthermore it is symbolizing plant breeding in the region. The shield with the dancetty bars was added in 1955(?), showing the oldest arms of the counts of Oldenburg.

Westerstede is seat of Ammerland county. According to a letter of the municipality dated 24 February 2003 to Stefan Schwoon the flag was approved on 10 August 1987. It is said that there exists a different draft dated 11 July 1988.
