Altenkirchen County Coat of Arms

Shield Argent a cross facetted of Gules and Sable; mantled, at dexter Gules a double queued lion rampant guardant Or armed and tongued Azure, at sinister Or a milrind Sable.
Meaning:
The lion displays the family arms of the Counts of Sayn. The milrind is taken from the arms of the Lords of Wildenburg and their successors the Barons of Hatzfeld. The cross is a combination of the black cross of the Archbishopric of Köln and the red cross of the Archbishopric of Trier. They all except the lords, who died out in 1418, ruled parts of the current county until 1803, when the region was occupied by France.
