Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is quarterly divided into red and white by a black cross. In the 1st quarter is a silver(=white) fleur de lis, in the 4th quarter an upright key of the same colour.
Meaning:
According to source the black cross is symbolizing the former sovereignty of the archbishopric and electorate of Köln. The key is an attribute of St.Peter, who is the patron of the archbishopric and also of the local parish church. The meaning of the lily is not clear. Some say, it reminds at the baptism of Widukind, the duke of Saxon tribe of Engern. The baptism should have been celebrated here in Medebach by emperor Karl the Great.

The coat of arms was granted on 12 February 1912. The flag never was approved officially.
