Adopted 28 May 1973, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. The coat of arms was approved on 18 June 1962. The arms are a combination of the arms of the two main landowners in the district, the monasteries of Bamberg and Ebrach. The lion is taken from the arms of Bamberg, the (canting) boar from the arms of Ebrach.
