Grünstadt Coat of Arms
Shield Vert an eagle Argent, armed and tongued Gules, surrounded by four Greek crosslets Or ordered 2:2.
Meaning:
Grünstadt gained the rights of a market town in 1556 and was considered to be a city in the 18th century. The first local court seal probably was made before 1400. It already displayed eagle and crosslets. The eagle is taken from the family arms of the Counts of Leiningen, who probably had been local rulers since the early 13th century. It is supposed that the crosslets are referring to the Benedictine Weißenburg Monastery in Alsace, which had been liege lord of the city. The former arms, granted in 1841 by King Ludwig I of Bayern, displayed the eagle on a blue shield, the proper pattern of the counts, with an additional crescent and cross in base. In 1890 the arms were revised and crescent and crosslet were omitted. A few years before the blue shield was replaced by a green one, considered to be canting.
